I often take long walks along the Edmonds waterfront. Invariably the area reminds me of Whitman's, “Out of the Cradle Endlessly Rocking.” The edge of land and sea whispers to me of life and death and of all the varied moments in between.

Storms build. Waves crash. The fishermen fish. The heron stalks. Families picnic. The gulls pick. Lovers embrace. Couples squabble. Children throw. Dogs fetch. Seals are born. Orcas hunt. The water laps. The sand shifts. The sun rises. The moon sets.

The cradle of life rocks like the tides, back and forth endlessly. Everything passes on, passing on.

Edmonds: Edge of the Sea captures moments of this timeless struggle.

About the Edmonds area and the Salish Sea: The area in which these photos are shot is a 1-1/2 mile stretch of shoreline fronting Puget Sound, a part of the Salish Sea. It is one of the most biologically rich marine areas in the world. At the same time, it is rich with human and suburban life. It includes three shoreline parks, an off-leash dog park, an underwater dive park, a 700-slip marina, a 930' fishing pier, and a large ferry landing.
